Immediate Release: February 23, 2002 BRONCS FALL
AT TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX-The doubles point was vital in Saturday’s men’s tennis between The University of Texas-Pan American and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders took it, and won three of six singles matches en route to a 4-3 decision over the Broncs Saturday. Freshmen Jeremy Salvo Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) and Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) each won twice. The pair teamed to defeat Eusebie Oprea and Oscar Roman at number two doubles, 8-1. Salvo downed Roman, 6-4, 7-5 at number six singles, while Koziell defeated Shazeb Niazi, 6-4, 6-3, at number four. Junior Neil Barraclough (Coventry, England, Cardinal Newman HS/Seward County CC) won the Broncs’ other match, defeating Jason Holland, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 at number five singles. “It was a tough match to lose,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “Losing the doubles point really hurt us. As a result, we had to win four singles matches against a team that we were evenly matched with. Jeremy and Filip played great. It’s good to see our two freshmen playing well. Neil also played well. It just wasn’t our day today.” The Broncs fell to 3-3 with the defeat. They will
return to action when they visit Louisiana-Monroe in a Southland
