DEFEAT GONZAGA
MORAGA, CA-A nice day and a good performance added up to a victory for The University of Texas-Pan American men’s tennis team Thursday afternoon. The Broncs downed Gonzaga, 7-0, at the tennis center at St. Mary’s College. UTPA did not lose a set in the match. Junior Neil Barraclough (Coventry, England/Cardinal Newman HS/ Seward CC) lost only a single game, teaming with sophomore Tom Mangleschots (Limburg, Belgium/KA 2 HS) to defeat Andy Livingston and Jesse Goldsmith at number three doubles, 8-1, then defeating Goldsmith at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0. Mangleschots won his singles match, defeating Brian McConnell at number two singles, 6-2, 6-1. Freshmen Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) and Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) downed Shaun Whitney and Brian McConnell at number one doubles, 8-5. Koziell defeated Drew Ernst at number three singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Salvo downed Livingston at number five singles, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Kareem Abdullah (Clarendon, TX/Clarendon HS/Seward County CC) and junior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis-PA) won their number two doubles match, defeating Ernst and Alex McBarnet, 8-0. Gower defeated John Whitney at number one singles, 6-1, 7-5, while Abdullah downed McBarnet at number four, 6-1, 6-4. “We played well today,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “We came out focused, jumped out early, and did a good job both in doubles and in singles. I was glad to see us win, because our next match will be a tough one against Santa Clara. Hopefully, what we did today will carry over to tomorrow.” The Broncs improved to 5-4, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-13. UTPA will visit Santa Clara Friday.
