EDINBURG
– The University of Texas-Pan American Tennis Program announced on Wednesday
the signing of Weslaco native Brandon Meiners to a national letter of intent for
the 2000-01 academic year.
Meiners, who competed for Weslaco High School for the last four years, comes to UTPA with some very impressive credentials. He is a three-time District 32-5A Champion at WHS and advanced to the 5A State Tournament in 2000, advancing to the quarterfinals. Meiners is believed to be the first Valley boy’s tennis player to win three straight District titles. He was named WHS Panther-of-the-Year after his strong final season for WHS.
He was a four-time All-District selection and was an All-Valley pick four years as well for Head Coach Johnnie Williams. In each of his last three years he showed marked improvement, going from fourth in the region in 1998, to third in 1999 and second last season.
Another well-rounded student-athlete, Meiners received the prestigious Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship. He was also Honors Graduate at Weslaco and a Texas Scholar. He was named Most Athletic-Academic Boys Athlete this year. Meiners stated that the strong Computer Science Department at UTPA played a major part in his decision to stay in the Valley.
“We are very excited about Brandon signing,” said UTPA Head Coach Scott Howard. “He is yet another excellent student-athlete and will compete for a starting spot in the fall. He is considered one of the best players to come out of the Valley in recent years. We expect immediate growth once he is surrounded by top-level competition.”
Meiners is the third recruit for the men’s tennis team this spring. He joins Edinburg native Eric Propst and United Kingdom native Matt Gower on the squad. The women’s team has also signed two players, Franklin, Texas, native Eve Nickelson and Los Alamos, New Mexico, native Julie Fife.
