WESLACO – Stephen F. Austin State’s Lance Dunaway shot a final round 70 to take individual honors, leading the Lumberjacks to a come-from-behind win at the UT-Pan American Golf Classic Tuesday afternoon at the Tierra Santa Golf Club.

Dunaway, who was tied for the lead with Robby Going, heading into the final round, took home individual medallist honors after shooting 68, 72 and a final round 70.  Dunaway’s 210 total stokes edged out McNeese State’s Going by one stroke.  Going fired a second round 69 sandwiched between two 71’s for a total of 211.  Going was the only golfer to play all three rounds under par.

After shooting a pair of 73’s on Monday, Santiago DeLarrea fired a final round 70 to tie for sixth overall.  DeLarrea ended the tournament with an even par total of 216 (73-73-70).

Stephen F. Austin earned team medallist honors with a three round score of 860 (278-298-284).  In the final round of competition SFASU’s golfers turned in three scores under par, one at par, and one at two over par.  Lamar University finished with three golfers in the top ten and took home second place after compiling a team score of 864.  Lamar had led after the first day by one stroke.

Host UTPA came in eighth place with a team score of 902.  Valley schools UT-Brownsville and STCC came in ninth and tenth place with team totals of 916 and 989 respectively.

“I am very proud of the way Santiago (DeLarrea) played,” stated Head Coach John Garcia.  “He gave us our best individual performance of the fall, hopefully this will springboard us into the spring.”

“Todd Grubert played steady for a freshman,” Garcia added, “After triple bogeying the second hole today, Todd really fought the rest of the round to finish the day with a 76.  He did it for the team, and that’s something every coach looks for in a player.”

This was the final tournament of the fall for the Broncs.  UTPA will hit the links again this spring.
