Immediate Release: December 30, 2000 Chatman's 25 Leads UT Pan American Past Oral Roberts in Men's Basketball Action OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. -- Mire Chatman scored a season-high 25 points and had seven steals to help lead the University of Texas-Pan American past Oral Roberts University 81-62, in action at the All-College Tournament Saturday night, held at the Myriad. Chatman, a junior from Garland, was nearly unstoppable, hitting on 9-of-11 shots from the field and 5-of-6 shots from the free throw line. He pulled down a season high eight rebounds, had three assists and had a season high seven steals. That total ranked in a tie for the seventh highest single-game total in UTPA history. Chatman was instrumental in helping the Broncs break away from the Golden Eagles early on. With 17:26 left in the first half, ORU led 4-2. UTPA then went on a 26-7 run to take a commanding 28-11 lead. Chatman scored eight points during the run, including two three-point plays. After a timeout ORU started to chip away at the lead and when Ralph Charles hit a pair of free throws with 2:38 left in the half the lead was just four at 34-30. But the Broncs finished the half with a 7-0 run, keyed by five points from Chatman. In the second half the Golden Eagles were able to cut the lead to 10 points three times, but could never get the count into single digits. Terrell Hill had his second strong game in the tournament, nearly posting his second double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Brian Merriweather had 13 points and John Braxton had 11 points. ORU was led by Charles with 15 points. Evan Black was the only other Golden Eagle in double figures with 13 points. UTPA improved to 5-7 overall with the win, while ORU dropped its ninth straight game and is now 3-9 on the season. UTPA will return to action in three days when they travel to Manhattan, Kansas, to take on Kansas State at 7 p.m. |
