Merriweather Scores 27 Points, But UT Pan American Falls to Arkansas State, 73-69

Photos from the Game

EDINBURG – Brian Merriweather scored 27 points, but Arkansas State University edged the University of Texas-Pan American, 73-69, in men’s basketball action Saturday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Merriweather, a senior from Evansville, Ind., hit on 11-of-17 shots from the field, including five three-pointers in the game.  He finished just one point off his season high of 28, set against Sul Ross State in the season opener.

Leading by four at the half, 32-28, the Indians came out of the locker room firing.  ASU went on a 6-0 run to start the second to take it’s largest lead of the game at 38-28.  But after a UTPA timeout the Broncs went on a run of their own.  Mire Chatman, who scored 15 points in the game, scored seven during a 21-7 run that gave the Broncs a 49-45 lead.  The Indians came back and retook the lead on a lay-up by Jason Jennings with 5:51.

UTPA came right back on a three-pointer by Chatman to take the lead back at 53-51.  After ASU retook the lead, Chatman hit another trey to give the Broncs the lead again.  But Nick Rivers jumper with 2:00 left in the game gave the Indians a lead they would not relinquish.  UTPA cut the lead to just one point on a trey by Merriweather, but that was as close as the Broncs would get.

Also scoring in double figures for the Broncs were John Braxton with 10 points and Marcus Quinn with 12 points.  Quinn also had a team-high six rebounds.  Rivers led the way for the Indians with 18 points in 26 minutes of play.  Jennings had 15 points and five rebounds.  Kolin Weaver scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

“We did a good job on Jennings all night,” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman.  “They hit three possessions in a row.  I don’t think we had one defensive stop in the last five minutes, which was critical for us to get the win tonight.  We fed the ball and executed well on offense, but we just couldn’t get a stop.  Any loss is a tough loss.  Our guys worked hard and tried to improve over when we played them over there (in Arkansas), and I thought we made serious strides.”

UTPA fell to 4-6 on the season with the loss, while Arkansas State improved to 6-6 overall.  The Indians swept the season series with the Broncs 2-0.  UTPA will return to action on Friday, December 29th, against Southern Methodist in the first round of the All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
