December 16, 2000 UT Pan American Shows Improvement, But Falls to Hawai'i, 86-73, for Fifth Straight Loss HONOLULU, HAWAII -- Five University of Hawai'i players scored in double figures and the Rainbow Warriors held off a strong second half charge by the University of Texas-Pan American to defeat the Broncs 86-73, in men's basketball action Saturday night at the Stan Sherriff Center. The turning point in the game came after the Rainbow Warriors took a commanding 10-point lead early in the second half (49-39). From there the Broncs outscored UH 17-8 to cut the lead to just one-point (57-56) on a layup by Marcus Quinn. UTPA would cut the lead to one point twice more before a jumper by Kwasinda Curtis gave the Broncs their first lead since early in the first half at 62-61. Moments later Brian Merriweather hit one of his five three-pointers to put the Broncs back up 65-64. Mire Chatman stole a Troy Ostler pass and had Merriweather streaking for a wide-open lay-up that would have given the Broncs a three-point lead. But Chatman overthrew the pass. From there the Rainbow Warriors went on a 16-5 run to end the game. Merriweather led the way for the Broncs with 19 points and five treys. Three other Broncs scored in double figures; Chatman with 13, Quinn with 11 and Kyle Sanders with 10. Ostler led UH with 23 points and 15 rebounds. For the game UTPA shot a solid 50.0% (29-58) from the field, including 55.6% (10-19) from three-point range. The 10 trey's marked the second straight game that the Broncs have made 10 or more three-pointers. Hawai'i shot a sizzling 63.6% (35-55) from the field, a season high. The Broncs will return to action in five days when they host the University of Texas at Dallas in the UTPA Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m. on December 21st. |
