Immediate Release: December 13, 2000 Pacific Takes Big Halftime Lead, Defeats UT Pan American 87-68 in Men's Basketball Action STOCKTON, CALIF. -- Pacific ran out to an 18-point halftime lead and never looked back in defeating UTPA, 87-68, at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Broncs shot just 34.8% (8-23) from the field and committed 11 turnovers in the first period. At the 13:02 mark of the first half the score stood tied at 17-17. But the Tigers went on a 26-4 run over the next 10:20 to take a commanding lead of 45-27 into the half. The Broncs came out of the lockerroom hot, outscoring the Tigers 8-2 to cut the lead to just 12 points. Pacific responded with a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 21 points. UTPA would cut the lead to 12 once more, but could get no closer. Mire Chatman led the Broncs with 18 points, while John Braxton had 17 points, including five three-pointers. Brian Merriweather, who was second in the nation in three-pointers per game coming in, was held to just two treys and 12 points overall. |
