Pan American Rolls Past Schreiner 113-68 in Men’s Basketball Action
Monday EDINBURG
– All-American candidate Brian Merriweather led six players scoring in
double figures as the University of Texas-Pan American rolled to its
third straight win, a 113-68 decision over Schreiner College, Monday
night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Merriweather,
a senior from Evansville, Ind., hit on 8-of-18 shots from the field,
including four three-pointers. He
also tied for the team lead with five steals.
Mire Chatman came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points.
Joey Tate also came off the bench to score 13 points in just 11
minutes of playing time. John
Braxton had 12 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Kyle Sanders scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Kwasinda Curtis had perhaps the best all-around game with 14
points, six assists, five steals and two rebounds. The game
was a rout right from the start. UTPA
ran out to a 19-5 lead behind eight points from Curtis.
A 22-6 run midway through the first half gave UTPA a 26-point
margin. Chris Borak and
Elester Whitmore tried to keep the Mountaineers in the game, but 24
turnovers and a stingy Bronc defense were too much for SC.
UTPA shot a sizzling 63.5% (47-74) from the field and scored the
most points in seven years. The
unselfish Broncs had 23 assists in the game and also had a season high
18 steals. “I
thought we were really unselfish again tonight,” said UTPA Head Coach
Bob Hoffman. “There were
guys that could have finished plays, they threw the ball back so
somebody else could score. That
speaks to a lot about the heart of the team, and the character of the
team. We shot the ball
well, we looked for each other well, but we have to continue to get
better on defense and the post defense.
We have to be together, we have to be tough minded.
I feel we have a chance to go in Thursday night and get a win (at
Northern Iowa), but we are going to have to play better team defense.” Borak led
a trio of Mountaineers in double figures with 19 points.
Whitmore had 17 points and Marvin Barley added 11. The Broncs (3-0), who are off to their best start in 16 years, will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Northern Iowa to kick off a five-game road trip. The Broncs will face the Panthers at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 30th. Schreiner falls to 0-3 on the season. |
