Pan American Men’s Basketball Slips Past Portland in Overtime Friday
Night EDINBURG
– Brian Merriweather’s three-pointer with 1:28 left put the
University of Texas-Pan American ahead for good as the Broncs pulled out
an 81-75 win in overtime over the Portland Pilots in NCAA Men’s
Basketball action Friday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The Broncs
(2-0) took the early lead in overtime on a Mire Chatman free throw at
the 4:08 mark. Tim Frost
gave the Pilots (2-1) the lead at 71-70 with a lay-up at the 3:00 mark.
Ross Jorgusen followed that up with a pair of free throws to give
the Pilots a three-point edge. Chatman
cut the lead to one with a jumper with 2:31 left, then Merriweather
followed with a trey to give the Broncs a lead they would not
relinquish. Lay-ups by
Marcus Quinn, Kyle Sanders and Chatman held off a late charge by the
Pilots. The Broncs made all
five of their shots in overtime, while the Pilots were just 2-for-9 in
the extra period. UTPA had
to fight just to get into overtime as the second half saw 15 lead
changes and five ties. No
team led by more than three points until the Broncs went on an 8-0 run
to take a 61-54 lead with 6:29 left on a free throw by Kwasinda Curtis.
But just when it looked like UTPA had a comfortable margin the
Pilots came back. Trailing
by seven with 4:56 to go, Adam Quick and Carmle Olowoyo hit back-to-back
three-pointers to cut the lead to just one point with 3:59 to go.
Another trey by Olowoyo with 1:18 left gave the Pilots the lead
at 69-67. But a Chatman
lay-up with 18 seconds left tied things up and sent the game to
overtime. “I knew
they were a great team, they beat Corpus Christi, so we know it was
going to be a wild finish,” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman.
“We were fortunate enough to make some plays in overtime to get
ahead. We just made plays,
but we did not get as many shots to go in, as we would have liked, but
overall I think our guys really stepped up.
We looked for extra passes in the second half, and it was such a
huge win for our team and our program.
No matter what the outcome is, these guys were going to lay it on
the line. We always can get
better at execution and those are things we will work on to make it
better.” Quinn led
a balanced scoring attack for UTPA with 17 points.
Chatman had 16 points, while Merriweather had 15.
Kyle Sanders had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
For the Pilots Frost led the way with 18 points and seven
rebounds. Olowoyo had 16
points, Bryan Mills had 13 points and Diaby Kamara had 10 points. UTPA returns to action in three days when they host Schriener College at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Portland will travel to the University of Oregon on November 28th at 7 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time). |
