Men's Basketball Team Announces Signing of Derrick East EDINBURG,
TX
– The University of Texas-Pan American Men’s
Basketball program announced today that highly touted high school
recruit, Derrick East, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play
basketball for the up-and-coming Bronc program. "Derrick is a very athletic player who will be
a great addition to our team," said Head Coach Bob Hoffman.
"He has played for championships and has been a part of a winning
program. We are excited about all the intangibles that he brings to our
squad," added Hoffman. East, a 6’8” forward from Lookeba-Sickles High
School will enter UTPA in the fall of 2001, beginning his collegiate
playing career under the guidance of Bronc Coach Bob Hoffman and his
staff. East, who resides in
Binger, OK, averaged 21.1 points, 12.9 rebounds and 6.1 blocks per game
as a senior while also earning All-State honors while leading his team
to a 27-3 record. Also very
impressive is the more than 1800 points East scored during his four
years as a prep star. Other notable accomplishments include two-time
Washita Valley Conference MVP; three-time All-Conference honors;
two-time All-County MVP; and three-time State Tourney All-Tournament
honors.
The Broncs, which will lose three scholarship
student-athletes to graduation following the 2000-2001 season have a
strong 2001-2002 schedule playing the likes of New Mexico State,
Minnesota, Memphis and Washington State, to name a few.
