Lead UT Pan American Men’s Basketball Past Centenary, 81-61, Saturday EDINBURG
– Brian Merriweather and Mire Chatman combined for 45 points, as the
University of Texas-Pan American rolled past Centenary College, 81-61,
in men’s basketball action Saturday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Merriweather,
a senior from Evansville, Ind., scored 22 points, including four
three-pointers. Chatman, a
junior from Garland, scored 23 points, dished out five assists and had
four steals to lead the way for UTPA.
He made 8-of-9 shots from the field, including both three-point
field goal attempts. Senior
Kwasinda Curtis had nine points and nine assists.
Kyle Sanders had 10 points and nine rebounds, just missing a
double-double. After a
tight start to the game, the Broncs pulled away mid-way through the
first half with a 14-0 run that gave them a 13 point lead.
The lead expanded to as much as 28 in the second half, as the
Broncs rolled to the win. Ronnie
McCollum, the nation’s leading scorer was held to just 22 points, well
below his season average of 29.4. He
was just 6-of-22 from the field, but made all 10 of his free throw
attempts in 39 minutes of play. “I
thought it was a good team win,” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman.
“It was a good way to send the seniors out.
The guys really battled, making big play after big play.
We were able to make enough stops to get some separation. All
four of those guys have done a wonderful job of helping us and buying in
to what we’re doing. These players have made a significant impact on our program.
(The Broncs next opponent, Texas A&M) Corpus Christi is a
real big time opponent. We’re
going to have to do a good job guarding them.” The Broncs will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their final game of the 2000-01 season on Tuesday night. UTPA will be going for it’s 13th win of the season when they tip off at 7 p.m. at Circle K Court. |
