Immediate Release: February 10, 2001 Merriweather’s
24 Leads UT Pan American Past Belmont 84-67 in Men’s Basketball Action EDINBURG
– Brian Merriweather scored 24 points and hit six three-pointers as
the University of Texas-Pan American rolled to an 84-67 win over Belmont
University in men’s basketball action Saturday night at the UTPA
Fieldhouse. Merriweather,
a senior from Evansville, Ind., hit on 6-of-12 shots from three point
range and 9-of-18 shots from the field overall.
Merriweather leads the nation in three-pointers per game with 3.9
per game. Merriweather
scored eight points during the decisive 18-7 run that extended
the UTPA lead to 13 points midway through the second half.
His three-pointer at the 17:36 mark started the run and his steal
and lay-up ended the run. Kwasinda
Curtis helped UTPA to ice the game with eight straight free throws in
the final four minutes. For
the game, UTPA made 76.2% (16-21) of it’s free throws. Kwasinda
Curtis had his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11
assists. He also led the
team with six rebounds. Mire
Chatman scored 17 points, had four assists and three steals in 26
minutes of play. Kyle Sanders went 6-of-8 from the field for 12 points.
Adam Sonn led a trio of Bruins in double figures with 21 points
and 12 rebounds. “The
words for tonight were perseverance and determination, because when you
play against a team that runs the five-man motion like them, you’ve
got to run and run to keep up,” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman.
“Our team was sprinting to keep up with their shooters.
They had us really spread out, but we did a good job covering
them. We were there the
majority of the time and we were fortunate that some of their shots did
not go in. We had a great
crowd tonight.” UTPA improved to 10-13 on the season and is now 8-1 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Belmont fell to 11-13 overall. The Broncs will return to action in just two days when they host Louisiana-Lafayette at the UTPA Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m. |
