| For Immediate Release: January 31, 2001 Contact: Derek Smolik, UTPA Director of Athletic Media Relations Four Broncs Score in Double Figures, But Wright State Edges UTPA in Men's Basketball 74-69 DAYTON, OHIO -- Mire Chatman led four Broncs in double figures with 19 points, but a late Wright State rally handed the University of Texas-Pan American a 74-69 loss Wednesday night at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. After falling behind early in the second half by as much as three points, the Broncs took control of the game. UTPA went on an 11-4 run to take a seven point lead at 52-45 at 11:54. The Broncs expanded the lead to eight points on a lay-up by Chatman at the 7:32 mark. But an 8-0 Raider run, keyed six Kevin Melson points, tied the game up with 4:15 left in the game. A three-pointer by Jess Deister game the Raiders the lead for good at 63-62. Also scoring in double figures for the Broncs were Brian Merriweather with 15 and John Braxton with 11 points. Kyle Sanders had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Leading the way for the Raiders were Israel Sheinfeld with 26 and Melson with 24 points. The Broncs (8-13) return to action on Saturday night when they rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Wright State improved to 14-6 on the season. |
