EDINBURG – Brian Merriweather and Mire Chatman combined to score 47 points as the University of Texas-Pan American men’s basketball team rolled to an 84-69 win over the University at Albany, 84-69, in men’s basketball action Saturday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Merriweather, a senior from Evansville, Ind., scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half, including six three pointers.  Chatman, a junior from Garland, had a solid all-around game with 23 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

UTPA struggled in the first half with 11 turnovers and made just 39.3% (11-28) of its shots from the field.  But trailing 34-24 with just 56 second left in the half, the Broncs began to turn it around.  First, Merriweather hit a three-pointer with 48 seconds left.  Then, after a defensive stop, Chatman hit a long three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to cut the lead to just 34-30 at the half.

The Broncs used the momentum from the late run to take control in the second half.  Trailing 47-43 with 14:30 left in the game, UTPA went on a 16-2 run to take a commanding 63-49 lead at the 8:05 mark of the first half.  Albany never cut the lead to less than 10 points the rest of the way.

Two other Broncs scored in double figures.  John Braxton had his best game in recent weeks with 14 points, while Kyle Sanders continued his strong play of late with 10 points.  Terrell Hill led the team with seven rebounds, while Kwasinda Curtis had 10 assists.

For the Great Danes, Will Brand scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds.  E.J. Gallup also chipped in with 16 points.

“We had some momentum plays (early in the second half),” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman.  “We got some dunks and started to have fun with it.   We started playing and it just loosened up the defense.  We need all the guys playing and (Chatman and Merriweather) are two integral parts that were hitting shots that were hard to beat and they were on it tonight, which is great.  We need to win and we need to take advantage of our home games.”

The Broncs, who improved to 7-10 on the season, will next take the court on Monday, January 15th at Louisiana-Lafayette at 7:05 p.m.  Albany will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday at 8 p.m. in Corpus Christi.
