Chatman Scores 22 Points, But Bronc Rally Falls Short as Rice Defeats UT Pan American 75-71

EDINBURG -- Mire Chatman scored a game-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as a furious second half rally fell short and the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team fell to Rice University 75-71 in action Wednesday night at Autry Court.

Chatman, a junior from Garland, scored 20 or more points for the fourth time in the last five games to lead the way for UTPA. He also tied for the team lead with six rebounds.

UTPA trailed by as much as 21 points in the second half when Erik Cooper completed a three-point play with 16:17 left in the game. But behind the shooting of Chatman and Brian Merriweather, the Broncs slowly chipped away at the lead. Chatman scored 12 of his points during the 42-23 run that cut the Owl lead to two points with 2:06 left. However the Broncs could not score in the final two minutes and Michael Walton hit a pair of free throws to ice the game with seven seconds left.

The loss was the 11th in a row for UTPA on the road. For the third straight game the contest was decided in the final seconds. In falling to Colorado State, Kansas State and Rice, the Broncs were outscored by just 14 total points.

The Broncs (6-10) will return to action in three days when they return to the friendly confines of the UTPA Fieldhouse, where they are 5-1 this season to host the University of Albany. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. Rice improved to 9-4 on the season with the win.
