Pan American Dominates LeTourneau, 98-33, in Men’s Basketball Action
Monday EDINBURG
– Kyle Sanders led five Broncs in double figures and the University of
Texas-Pan American held LeTourneau University to just seven first half
points as the Broncs rolled to an easy 98-33 win over the Yellowjackets
Monday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Sanders, a
junior from Philadelphia, Penn., hit on 9-of-10 shots from the field and
made all three of his foul shots to set a career high of 21 points. His previous best was 19 points against Wright State last
season. He also pulled down
eight rebounds, second best on the team. Sanders
made the first basket of the game, a lay-up just 1:04 into the contest,
and the Broncs never looked back. UTPA
outscored the Yellowjackets 49-7 in the first half.
LU made just 2-of-32 shots from the field in the first half
(6.3%) and were outrebounded 40-13 by the Broncs.
UTPA shot 52.8% from the field in the first period. LeTourneau
had greater success in the second half, but never got into the game.
For the contest LU shot 16.7% from the field (11-66), while UTPA
shot 55.7% (39-70). Four
Broncs joined Sanders in double figures.
Brian Merriweather and Mire Chatman had 14 points apiece, while
John Braxton and DeFrance Gurley had 10 points each.
Marcus Quinn led the way on the boards with 11 rebounds, as UTPA
outboarded the Yellowjackets 66-32.
UTPA also had 29 assists, a season high. For
LeTourneau, Skeeter Brantley was the only player in double figures with
10 points. Three other
players scored six points apiece. “We went
into the game just wanting to work on some things that we needed to get
better at,” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman.
“I thought we played really good team defense and made some
stops when we had too. They
are a Division III team, and had won a couple of good games last week in
their league and I think they came out here a little flat and maybe a
little intimidated. You go
in to a game hoping you can win it, but you don’t go into it knowing
it is over.” The Broncs (6-9) return to action in just two days when they travel to Houston to take on the Owls of Rice University at 7:35 p.m. LeTourneau fell to 4-6 overall and will next take the floor against Mississippi College at 7:30 p.m. on January 11th. |
