January 4, 2001 Chatman Leads the Way, But UTPA Men's Basketball Edged Again on the Road at Colorado St. 71-62 FORT COLLINS, COLO. -- Mire Chatman scored 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of Texas-Pan American lost its seventh road game of the season, 71-62, to Colorado State, Thursday night at Moby Arena. Chatman, a junior from Garland, scored 20 or more points for the third straight game. He hit on 9-of-15 shots from the field, pulled down five rebounds and had two steals. Brian Merriweather was the only other Bronc to score in double figures with 11 points. It was also the third straight game that Chatman has led the Broncs in scoring. UTPA surprised the homestanding Rams with a 9-2 run to start the game and led through much of the first half. CSU came back and took its first lead of the half at the 7:41 mark on a three-pointer by Ron Grady. The Broncs regained the lead and held it until Garrett Patik's basket with 2:11 left. The Rams took a 30-29 lead into the locker room. Again the Broncs came out firing to start the second half and widened their lead to as much as five points. However the Rams used a 10-0 run to retake the lead for good. CSU led by as many as 13 points. UTPA cut the lead under 10 points, but could not get any closer than that. John Sivesind led a trio of Rams in double figures with 17 points. David Fisher had 15 points and Grady had 14 points. CSU held the Broncs to a season low four three-pointers in the game. UTPA came into the game averaging 8.2 per game. The Broncs also shot just 40.4% (21-52) from the field and 21.1% (4-19) from three-point range. CSU shot 46.0% and 33.3%, respectively, in comparison. UTPA dropped it's second straight game and fell to 5-9 on the season. The Rams improved to 9-4 on the season. The Broncs will return to action in four days when they host Division III LeTourneau University at the UTPA Fieldhouse in Edinburg on Monday, January 8th. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. |
