Chatman Scores 21, But Kansas State Slips Past UT Pan American in Men's Basketball, 69-68

EDINBURG -- Matt Siebrandt hit the first of two free throw attempts with 2.4 seconds to play to snap a 68-68 tie and lead Kansas State University to a 69-68 win over the University of Texas-Pan American Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Broncs, who led most of the second half, took their largest lead of the half, 66-59, on a lay-up by Brian Merriweather with 5:43 left.  Kansas State would come back, slowly chipping away at the lead.  Larry Reid and Kelvin Howell each hit two free throws to cut the lead to three points with 4:49 left.  Siebrandt hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to just two points with 3:26 left.  Chatman then hit a short jumper to give the Broncs a 68-64 lead with 2:32 left.  Siebrandt came right back with a three-point play to cut the lead to just one point with 2:04 left.  Travis Reynolds then tied things at 68-68 with just 32 seconds left.  However the Broncs were unable to get off a shot and Siebrandt was fouled with 2.4 seconds left and he hit the first of the two free throws to give KSU the win.

Chatman continued on his recent hot streak, scoring a game-high 21 points in just 24 minutes of playing time, coming off the bench.  Chatman, a junior from Garland, Texas, also had four steals, three rebounds and two assists.  He made 8-of-10 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.

Also scoring in double figures for the Broncs was Brian Merriweather with 11 points and Kyle Sanders with 10 points.  Terrell Hill had eight points and led the Broncs with six rebounds.  Marcus Quinn scored seven points and also pulled down six rebounds.   Phineas Atchison led the way for the Wildcats with 18 points, including four treys.

UTPA came out strong right from the start, surprising the home crowd at Bramlage Coliseum by taking an early 16-8 lead on a three-pointer by Merriweather.  The Broncs would lead by as many as nine points before the Wildcats came back.  An 11-0 KSU run to end the half gave the Wildcats a 36-34 lead going into the locker room.

UTPA fell to 5-8 with the loss, while Kansas State improved to 6-5.  The Broncs return to action in just two days, on Thursday, January 4th, at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Col.
