HOST NEW MEXICO STATE EDINBURG, TX–At this stage in
the season, every game is an important one for The University of
Texas-Pan American men’s basketball team. The Broncs will take on one
of the best teams they have played this season when they host New Mexico
State Monday night in their next-to-last home game of the 2001-2002
season. Game time Monday night is 7:30 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. UTPA
takes an 18-8 record into Monday night’s game. The Broncs broke a
losing streak with Saturday night’s 110-105 win at Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi. In that game, senior guard Mire Chatman
(Garland, TX/South Garland HS/Southwestern Christian JC) scored 46
points, tying him for the seventh highest single-game total ever by a
UTPA men’s basketball player. The Broncs’ total of 110 points
equaled their highest total ever for a road game.
NMSU
is 17-8, 9-3 in the Sun Belt. The Aggies have won six games in a row and
seven of their last eight, and are coming off a 98-67 victory Saturday
against Western New Mexico at which the court at their home arena, the
Pan American center, was renamed for longtime Head Coach Lou Henson.
Henson has 739 victories, ranking tenth all-time among NCAA Division I
head coaches, and fifth all-time on the active Division I coaching list.
“New
Mexico State is very athletic, they’ll be one of the most athletic
teams we’ll see,” said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman. “It’s going
to be a very tough game. We’ll have to execute our offense, do a good
job of containing them on defense, and rebound as well as we can. It
would be nice to have a full house Monday night.” Following
the NMSU game, the Broncs will hit the road to play Lipscomb and
Gardner-Webb this weekend. MBB-22-01-021002 |
