EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American overcame a sluggish first half to roll past Mary-Hardin-Baylor 77-49 in men’s basketball action Monday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Crusaders (4-4), an NCAA Division III team from Belton, Texas, hung with the Broncs throughout a physical first half and trailed just 25-24 at the intermission.  A 23-3 run midway through the second half turned a 37-33 UTPA lead into a 60-36 rout.  After shooting just 32.0% (8-25) from the field in the first half, the Broncs hit on 62.1% (18-29) of their second half shots.  MHB was limited to just 22.6% (7-31) shooting from the field in the second half and committed 11 turnovers in the second frame.

Brian Merriweather struggled, but still led all scorers with 17 points, including two three-pointers.  Kyle Sanders also had a strong game with 15 points and seven rebounds.  Matt Palmquist nearly notched his second double-double of the season, falling just short with 10 points and nine rebounds.  He also had three blocks.

With the win, the Broncs improve to 2-5 on the season.  The Broncs return to action on Wednesday night at 7:30 in the UTPA Fieldhouse.  The game will be part of a women’s-men’s doubleheader as the Lady Broncs will face off against Southwest Texas State at 1:00 p.m.
