Merriweather Scores 27, But Colorado Comes From Behind to Defeat Men's Basketball 79-64
BOULDER, COLO. -- Brian Merriweather scored 27 points, including seven three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Colorado came from behind to defeat the University of Texas-Pan American, 79-64, in men's basketball action Tuesday night at the Coors Events Center.
Behind the early hot shooting of Merriweather and John Braxton UTPA took a 44-38 lead into the lockeroom at the half. Braxton hit three early treys, helping the Broncs to the lead, but only scored one more point the rest of the game. Merriweather led all scorers with 20 points at the half, including six three-point baskets. UTPA shot 59.3% (16-27) from the field in the first half.
The second half was a total reversal of the first. Merriweather would only scored seven points and, as a team, UTPA would tally just 20 points. UTPA shot just 29.6% (8-27) from the field, while Colorado hit on 54.2% (13-24). Colorado inside dominance became a factor as five Broncs got into foul trouble in the second half, including Kwasinda Curtis, who fouled out with 4:49 left in the game. The Broncs tied the game for the last time at 51-51 before the Buffaloes broke away and eventually won by 15 points.
Merriweather was joined in double figures by Watara Banks, who had 17 points, and Braxton with 10 points. Three CU players scored 64 of the team's 79 points. Nick Mohr led the way with 22, while Jaquay Walls and Jamahl Mosley both had 21 points. The Buffs also dominated on the boards, owning a 43-23 edge.
The Broncs fell to 10-14 on the season with the loss, while Colorado improved to 14-10. The Broncs will return to action on Saturday, February 19th, at the UTPA Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
