Road No Problem for UT-Pan American Men's Basketball, Broncs Defeat Belmont, 80-73
NASHVILLE, TENN. -- Brian Merriweather led a balanced attack with 21 points as the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team defeated Belmont University, 80-73, Saturday afternoon at Striplin Gymnasium, breaking a three-game losing streak.
Merriweather did his usual work, scoring 21 points, including five three-pointers in 31 minutes. Watara Banks made his first start of the season and responded with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Matt Palmquist came off the bench to score 12 points, pull down five rebounds and block two shots. With his two blocks Palmquist now has 68 in his career, moving him into third place on UTPA's all-time list. John Braxton scored in double figures for the seventh straight game with 11 points. Wes Burtner led a trio of Bruins scoring in double figures with 21 points.
UTPA controlled the action in the first half, making 65.4% (17-26) of its shots from the field, but the Bruins kept close and trailed by just three points, 40-37, at the half. An early 6-0 run by the Broncs gave them a comfortable eight point lead and a 13-4 run mid-way through the half, put the game out of reach, despite eight second half three-point baskets by the Bruins.
The Broncs will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5th when they travel to Corpus Christi to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7:30 p.m.
