Louisiana-Lafayette Runs Out to Big Lead, Holds Off UT-Pan American 101-88
LAFAYETTE, LA. -- The University of Louisiana Lafayette ran out to a big lead early on and held off a strong charge by the University of Texas-Pan American for a 101-88 win in men's basketball action Monday night at the Cajundome.
The Ragin Cajuns came out of the blocks fast, taking a 21-3 lead just 5:48 into the game. Kyle Sanders finally broke the streak with a layup at the 13:54 mark. Soon after that Brian Merriweather led the Broncs back into the game. Merriweather scored six points as UTPA went on 20-11 run to cut the Ragin Cajun lead to 36-28 with 3:09. ULL came back and scored six of the last eight points of the first half to go into the lockeroom with a 46-32 lead.
The Broncs stayed close to the Ragin Cajuns through most of the second half, but could never cut the lead to less than 10 points. Blane Harmon hit a driving layup with 6:25 left in the game to increase the lead to 24 points at 86-62. But to the Broncs credit, they didn't give up and went on a 20-9 run to cut the lead back to just 12 points with 1:08 left. But that was as close as they would get.
Harmon led all scorers with 23 points and also had seven assists for ULL. Three other Ragin Cajuns scored in double figures with Shea Whiting scoring 15, Lonnie Thomas 14 and Orlando Butler with 10. Merriweather led the way for the Broncs with 22 points, including six three-point baskets. John Braxton had 17 points and nine rebounds, Watara Banks had 13 points and Kyle Sanders scored 12.
The Broncs will return to action when they travel to Shreveport, La., to take on the Gents of Centenary College at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, January 22.
