For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 3, 2001
Contact: Dave Geringer, UTPA Director of Athletic Media Relations, (956) 381-2240

EDINBURG, TX-For the second consecutive season, AM 1240-KSOX Monster Sports Radio will broadcast all of the University of Texas-Pan American’s men’s basketball games. In addition, for the first time in the history of UTPA athletics, KSOX will also broadcast four UTPA women’s basketball games. The announcement was made by UTPA Director of Athletics William J. Weidner and KSOX General Manager Lance Hawkins.

All of UTPA‘s men’s basketball games, at home and on the road, will be broadcast. In addition, KSOX tentatively plans to broadcast the November 17th UTPA women’s game in the Lady Broncs Classic, as well as women’s games against Texas A&M-Kingsville December 13th, New Mexico State January 17th,  and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi February 23rd. KSOX Sports Director Jeff Koch will handle the play-by-play for all of the broadcasts.

The men open the regular season with a game against Sul Ross State at 8 p.m. November 17th, following the championship game in the Lady Bronc Classic. That game will be KSOX’s first men’s broadcast. UTPA plays its first four games at home, with Southwest Texas State among the visitors. The Broncs also host Mountain West Conference rival Air Force, Sun Belt foes New Mexico State and Middle Tennessee State, and in-state rivals Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

After playing their first four games at home, the men will visit Northern Iowa and Big Ten power Minnesota, then head west to take on Portland of the West Coast Conference and Washington State of the Pac Ten. UTPA will face a strong field at the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico December 20th through the 22nd, beginning with a matchup against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference power Niagara. The Broncs visit in-state rival Texas of the Big 12 January 2nd, and also travel to play in-state foes Rice,  Southwest Texas State, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The women’s broadcast schedule includes the second game in the Lady Bronc Classic, with UTPA facing a strong field in Montana of the Big Sky Conference, Southeast Missouri State of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas-Little Rock. The other three games include two against in-state rivals in TAMU-Kingsville and TAMU-Corpus Christi, as well as a game against New Mexico State of the Sun Belt Conference.

"We are extremely happy to continue and strengthen our partnership as the exclusive radio home of Texas-Pan American basketball,” said Hawkins. “Last year's history-making broadcasts of all the home and away games was a huge success for our station, and the response from our listeners was very positive.

Adding several Lady Broncs games to our lineup this season shows our commitment and support of the program. We anticipate strong and successful seasons from both teams."

"I know the season opener is still a few weeks away, but I can't wait to get the year started,” said Koch.  “In the 23 years I have been in this business, I can say that traveling with the Broncs and broadcasting their games was the most personally rewarding and fun time I have had in quite some time. Coach Bob

Hoffman and his staff run a first-class organization, and this season should pay great dividends in the win-loss column. I am also looking forward to the Lady Broncs games. They will be a great addition to our overall coverage of the program."

Weidner was pleased with the agreement. “KSOX radio is clearly the premier radio station for sports programming in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Weidner. “Our continued partnership with the number one sports radio station in the region further reinforces our credibility in regard to UTPA athletics being a program that is definitely on the rise. We are extremely pleased to not only continue our partnership with KSOX regarding the broadcast of all of our men’s basketball games for the 2001-2002 season, but also as it relates to the history-making broadcasts of selected Lady Bronc women’s basketball games as well. There is much anticipation on campus, and throughout the region as we look forward to an exciting season of Bronc and Lady Bronc basketball at UTPA. All of our fans throughout the region will now have the opportunity to follow the excitement of UTPA basketball as both programs take on impressive and challenging schedules this season.”
