UTPA ATHLETICS WILL AID COMFORT HOUSE EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's athletic department has agreed to form a partnership with the Comfort House of McAllen. The partnership will involve student-athletes from Texas-Pan American assisting at the Comfort House, which is located at 617 Dallas Avenue in McAllen and provides free end-of-life care for people who are terminally ill. "At The University of Texas-Pan American, our athletic program is committed to the concept of community involvement and service," said UTPA Director of Athletics William J. Weidner. "The Comfort House of McAllen is a very worthy recipient of our support, and we welcome the opportunity to assist their efforts." The Comfort House, which has been serving patients for 13 years, is a 10-bed, residential facility that provides care 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people who have been diagnosed with four months or less to live. The facility is staffed with five paid caregivers, who are certified nurse's assistants, and has taken care of more than 850 people during the last 13 years. "We are thrilled about our exciting partnership with the athletic program at such a great institution, and such wonderful people," said Mary Rincones, the Acting Administrator of Comfort House. "We look forward to a great relationship." The Comfort House will sponsor their second annual Walkathon this Saturday, February 22nd. The Walkathon will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. at Doc Neuhaus Park at 8th Street and Dallas Avenue in McAllen, with the walk scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. Anyone who wishes to donate, volunteer or would like more information about the Walkathon should contact Comfort House at 687-7367.
