Broncs Fall to Longhorns 12-6
AUSTIN, TX- The
University of Texas-Pan American dropped a single game against the Texas
Longhorns by a score of 11-5 Tuesday night at Disch-Faulk Field.
This was the second time the two teams met this year with Texas
taking the first meeting 12-6 earlier in the season.
The
Broncs jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when senior right
fielder Darren Heinrichs hit a two-run home run, his team leading 10th
of the season. The
Longhorns were quick to answer by loading the bases for Eddie Romprey,
who tripled in three runners to give UT a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of
the same inning.
The Broncs responded with three runs in the fourth to go ahead 5-3 after
first baseman Sergio Pompa tripled home two runs and pinch hitter Mark
DaSilva delivered a RBI-single to left to score the third of the inning.
This lead was short lived as Texas came back in the bottom of the
fourth on a RBI-single by Kalani Napoleon and a two-run home run from
Ryan Hubele to take the lead 6-5. In
the seventh, an RBI-single by Ryan Brooks and a two-run triple from Matt
Rosenberg, combined with a UTPA error, lead to four more runs to extend
the Longhorn lead to 10-5. Texas then tacked on another run in the
eighth on a Sam Anderson sacrifice fly to close out the 11-5 victory.
The
Longhorn’s Ryan France (5-4) went the final six innings to pick up the
win for UT. UTPA starter Frank
James ended up with the loss, lowering his season record to 1-9.
The
Broncs will next face UT-San Antonio on May 2, 2001 at 1:00pm for game
one of a double-header.
