Islanders Baseball Team Defeats UTPA, 7-5

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Carlos Garcia
scattered eight hits over seven innings to propel Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi to a 7-5 victory over UT-Pan American, Saturday evening at
Cabaniss Field.
The Islanders, now 16-29, broke a 1-1 tie and took the lead for good
with a five-run third inning. Jimmy Fly opened the frame with a solo
homer to left, his second of the year. Two batters later, Rene Chavez
belted his fourth homer of the year off UTPA starter Mike Calvert.
Trailing 6-1, the Broncs cut the deficit to one by scoring five
unanswered runs in the middle innings. Darren Heinrichs led the comeback
with a 2 for 4 effort. The senior, who belted a solo homer in the second
inning, unloaded on a Garcia offering to lead off the sixth. Jason
Thompson added a three-hit effort for the Broncs.
However, A&M-CC added an insurance run in the sixth on a single by
Michael Shandler and Brian Hartung (Sinton) closed the door with two
scoreless innings of relief.
Garcia, who fanned 11 batters, upped his mark to 5-4, while Calvert fell
to 1-4. Hartung picked up his sixth save of the year.
A&M-CC's Josh Wilson went a perfect 3 for 3 to up his batting
average to .426 on the year. Shandler and Chavez each tallied two hits a
piece for the Islanders.
Both teams will return to action, Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader
beginning at 1:00 pm at Cabaniss Field. |
