UTPA BASEBALL TO OPEN AGAINST SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE

EDINBURG, TX-With last year’s rebuilding season behind them, The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team will open their 2002 baseball schedule this weekend, and play their first game ever at the state-of-the-art Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

UTPA will host Southwest Texas State in a pair of single games. Saturday’s game begins at 2:00 p.m. at Edinburg North High School. Sunday, the Broncs make their debut at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium at 1:00 p.m. UTPA played at Jody Ramsey Stadium on campus through the end of last season.

“Our guys have been working out with a lot of energy, and are anxious to get started,” said UTPA Head Coach Reggie Tredaway. “With all the new guys that we have, how good we are going to be is something that I can’t say.”

The Bobcats return 18 letterwinners from a team that went 36-22 last season, tying for third in the Southland Conference with a 15-11 record. “Southwest Texas is always in the top two or three in the Southland Conference, and Coach (Ty) Harrington does an outstanding job coaching, as well as recruiting,” said Tredaway.  “A lot of times, we’re after the same players.”

The competition for starting positions has been keen this spring, and Tredaway indicated that the Broncs’ lineup is still being finalized. “With so many new guys, everything was wide open,” said Tredaway. “We’re going to put the guys on the field who are doing the best job, and we also have backup players at each position who have been doing as well. We will have to look at our strengths against right-handed pitchers or left-handed pitchers. Our lineup will vary a little bit, depending on the situation. We’ll learn more about our team as we go along each day. I want us to go out, be competitive, pitch well, play good defense, and have a chance to win.”

Two veterans and one newcomer are slated to see action on the mound this weekend. “(Junior) Travis Parker  (Brownsville, TX/Brownsville Hanna HS/Texas-Brownsville) and (senior) Frank James (Elgin, TX/Elgin HS/Navarro JC) are scheduled to go Saturday,” said Tredaway. “(Senior) Justin Dowd  (Waxahachie, TX/Waxahachie HS/Navarro JC) is scheduled to start Sunday.

After this weekend’s series, the Broncs will hit the road, visiting Lamar next weekend.
