UTPA STUDENT-ATHLETES EXCEL
ACADEMICALLY
EDINBURG, TX-For the sixth consecutive semester,
student-athletes at The University of Texas-Pan American have improved
upon their academic performance.
The athletic department’s continued commitment to
academics has resulted in yet another increase in the department’s
overall grade-point average.
The
cumulative GPA for UTPA’s student-athletes this spring was 2.88. That
was an improvement from the department’s cumulative GPA for the fall,
which was 2.81. The department’s GPA for the recently-completed spring
semester was also higher than the 2.62 undergraduate GPA achieved by the
general Texas-Pan American undergraduate student body, according to the
Office of Admissions and Records.
“Our athletic program at UTPA is committed to providing an environment
that enables each of our student-athletes to successfully strive for
excellence in both the athletic and academic arenas,” said UTPA
Director of Athletics William J. Weidner. “The attainment of a
departmental cumulative GPA of 2.88 is strong evidence of that
commitment, and is an achievement of which we are most proud.”
During
the recently completed spring semester, 61 of 148 UTPA student-athletes
(41 per cent) earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. In
addition, 46 student-athletes (31 per cent) earned a GPA of 3.2 or
higher, while 26 (17 per cent) earned a GPA of 3.5 or above.
"I
am very pleased with the Spring 2002 departmental cumulative GPA of 2.88
earned by our student-athletes,” said UTPA Director of Academic
Support and Student Services for Athletics Chris Uchacz. “The academic
performance of UTPA student-athletes has steadily improved since the
Fall 1999 semester. This
trend is an indication of the commitment that the athletics department
and our coaches have made to recruiting quality student-athletes. I am
excited as we move closer to our goal of a departmental cumulative GPA
of 3.00, which would rank UTPA among the nation's elite".
As a result of the department’s academic performance, 61
student-athletes were inducted into the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club, an honor
accorded to all student-athletes who earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the
semester.
Even higher honors were awarded to 34 additional
student-athletes. Dean’s List Second Honors went to 26
student-athletes who earned GPA’s of 3.5 or higher, while eight
student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPA’s, and received Dean’s List
First Honors.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams posted the best academic
performances. The Lady Bronc tennis team earned the highest departmental
semester GPA (3.65), while also posting the best cumulative grade-point
average for the athletic department at 3.44. The Bronc tennis team had
the best semester GPA among all UTPA men’s teams at 3.34, which was
also the second-best GPA earned by a team. The men’s tennis team’s
cumulative GPA of 3.12 was the top cumulative mark for a men’s team.
Three
other teams had GPA’s of 3.0 or above for the spring semester. The
women’s basketball, volleyball and women’s golf teams all had GPAs
of 3.2. Two UTPA teams had cumulative GPA’s of 3.0 and above after the
spring semester, as the men’s tennis team and the women’s golf team
both had GPAs of 3.1.
Six UTPA student-athletes were recipients of 2002
Arthur Ashe, Junior Sport Scholar Awards. The Ashe awards program is
sponsored by Black Issues in Higher Education, and is a very
prestigious award that recognizes the commitment of minority
student-athletes to both academics and athletics.
The United States Achievement Academy also
recognized 26 UTPA athletes as USAA All-American Sport Scholars. The
student-athletes honored represented 13 of the 14 NCAA Division I
programs at Texas-Pan American.
