A Slave Ship Speaks: The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie
recalls the historical and emotional realities of
the early 16th century transatlantic slave trade.
Experience the journey by viewing the artifacts
recovered from the slave ship sunk in the
year 1700. Among its relics are the ship’s bell,
weapons, glass trade beads, ivory, pewter ware
and iron shackles that held hundreds of African
men, women, and children captive. Visitors will
travel from a trader’s office in London to the
ship’s cramped slave hold and end with a view of
marine archeologists’ painstaking efforts to help
ensure that this disturbing chapter in history is
never forgotten.
